Training

Velofondista offers two levels of bike maintenance training

The Basics

Our basic maintenance training gives an overview of the modern bicycle in terms of how it works and fits together. This course will cover the most common issues you may encounter whilst out on a ride and how to deal with them. We will also show you how to clean and maintain various components to keep them in good working order for as long as possible. This course is suitable for cyclists who consider themselves to be absolute beginners in terms of bicycle maintenance and no prior knowledge is necessary. At the end of this course you should feel much more confident about getting home following a mechanical failure.

Intermediate Level

Our intermediate training course is more in-depth and assumes that you have carried out some basic repairs and maintenance on your bike. During this course we look at the various fasteners, bearings and componentry which combine to ensure a smooth running, well set up and reliable bicycle. We will cover more complicated on-ride fixes and look at gear indexing and set up. Below is an overview of topics covered:

  • Anatomy of the bicycle
  • How it all fits together and mechanical advantage
  • Three essential ingredients
  • Bearings
  • Cables
  • Gears – set up and indexing
  • Brakes
  • Wheels, tyres and tubes
  • Chains
  • Essential kit to carry
  • Each of these topics will be tailored to suit candidates depending on what sort of bike they ride and their level of understanding / personal requirements. There will be one to one time set aside to ensure that each attendee goes away with all the information they need and relevant documents and notes will be provided on a memory stick. For anyone who has attended the intermediate training course, there will be the opportunity to come into the workshop at a future date to carry out their own bike service under close supervision. This will allow trainees to use their new skills without having to purchase expensive tools or be concerned about overlooking elements of carrying out certain tasks for the first time.
